The Captains by 1pen The Captains by 1pen
:D  Yay, I finally get to release this! :D

A while back, the team asked me to do a series on the captains. Of the groups I've shot before and since, these three players were the most anxious.  (Channing, "A" on left, only eased up once he got to try to kill me with slapshots, Adam "other A", when he got to make a tidalwave of snow for the camera, and Marty...well, I think he just enjoyed grumbling in his incredibly deep Canadian accent.) I completely understand as this is their public image and there's always a fear of saving face in front of teammates.  So about midway I started ignoring them and they started ignoring me and sure enough in a few minutes they wandered over to the boards, relaxed and started chatting.  And that's when I pounced. As soon as they heard the shutter all three turned around at the same time.  The rest of the afternoon went fine. But of all the shots we took, this is the one everyone pointed to.  It is the least fancy, the least technical,...colour isn't much, the background isn't great and their legs are cut off, but we left it untouched, the way it was when I took it, and last Saturday this was the photo the boys signed and handed to the fans.  For me, it's my favourite too, probably because when I see it, I see that whole afternoon playing out in my memories again...killer-slapshots and all.

I love my job, and I'm very fond of the athletes I work with. All images are ©copyright 1pen and my sports media company. You may NOT use, replicate, manipulate, or modify this image without my permission. All Rights Reserved.

It only goes to show how they are just as human as we are. I love it!

Scratch that. I love ALL your hockey related work. Are you a photographer for the AHL?

Thank you! :D

No, I am an official ECHL photographer. :) I really love working with these players and this league.  Very rough, very honest, very unpredictable, but so exciting.

That sounds like fun! What does ECHL stand for?

European continental hockey league?

No, the East Coast Hockey League.  It covers most of the US and is the principal farm to the AHL. It is most players first introduction to professional hockey as many are players straight from the draft, out of juniors or college.

Ooh! So you could be photoing a player that may soon be the next Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, Alexander Ovechkin, or Sidney Crosby? Cool!

Possibly. Though, honestly, the real prodigies rarely go through the ECHL, most go straight to NHL or at least AHL.  Still, a lot of them do come through the little farm.

Well, there's about 600 of them that have gone up during the league's existence. :XD:  From my own team? Keith Ballard, Todd Bertuzzi, Tevor Daly, Dan Ellis, Zenon Konopka, Trevor Lewis, Steve Ott, Mike Smith that I can remember.  More I think, but that's all I remember. And some of those were during our AHL days actually. lol.
